Elvis Rocks Caddington!

CADDINGTON VILLAGE SHOW 2008

Amazingly the sun shone down yet again on this year's Caddington Village Show on 13 September.  Mark Dobbs, Bedfordshire's answer to Elvis Presley, opened the show with some fantastic Elvis numbers which got everyone in the mood for a fun afternoon.  New this year and a real highlight of the show was the travelling zoo, where children could meet and handle a variety of furry, scaly and many-legged friends as well as watch ferret racing!  Children also enjoyed the bouncy castles and Bebo the clown, while braver visitors attempted to stay put on the bucking bronco.

We were spoiled for entertainment this year, with a brass ensemble, Caddington Blues morris dancers and Groove Street Dance all performing.  There were 16 craft stalls with a wide variety of different crafts on sale from our talented locals.  Refreshments included cream teas, ice creams, Pimms tent and a hog roast.  Over on the green, the popular climbing wall returned together with an obstacle race and teacup rides for those who preferred their thrills at ground level!  Adults enjoyed a fantastic array of vintage and specialist cars and motorbikes displayed by local enthusiasts.

The produce show was as popular as ever, and as usual the judges had some tough decisions to make.  The overall winners were:

Maurice Martin Trophy for most points in the adult classes: Judy Woodward
Caddington Shield for juniors 0-4: Eleanor Astridge
Jean Rix Shield for juniors 5-9: Annabel Astridge
Elizabeth Grey Cup for juniors 10-14: Libby McCaughy
Garwood Shield for most points awarded to a class at Caddington Village School: 4M
The Smith Shield for best portfolio of photographs: Debbie Jackson
Caddington Shield for most points in section 5, fruit and vegetables: Mark Jefferies
Caddington’s biggest pumpkin: Samuel and Luke Jefferies
Ann Howlett Cup for ‘Best in show’ in the dog show: Woody the Working Cocker Spaniel

Well done to everyone who took part.

We owe a great deal of thanks to our sponsors and other village businesses who willingly donated money, time or assistance to the show. Hopefully we have thanked everyone who gave up their time to help make the day a success. If we have forgotten you it is not intentional, we appreciate all the help we get. Thank you.
If you have any feedback about the show, suggestions for next year, or would like to help next year in any way, please contact Christiane on 01582 456762 or Sally on 01582 412519, or you can email us at treleavenl@aol.com.  Remember this is your show: if there is something you would like to see there let us know and we will see what we can do!

We hope the next Caddington  Village Show will be on Saturday 19th September 2009 at the old Heathfield site, but as the future of the site is uncertain watch this space for more details.

History of the Show

The first Caddington Village Show was held at the Baptist Church in 2002 as a produce and dog show.  The following year the show moved to its current venue at Heathfield Lower School, in the heart of the village, as a produce show and craft fair.  In 2005 the organisers decided to take a well earned rest.

For a while the show was threatened with closure.  However a group of mums from the village decided the show was worth saving and decided to try attracting more villagers to the show by attempting to provide something for everyone.  They revived the dog show, expanded the craft fair, provided children’s entertainment including a free balloon modelling clown and brought in a brass band which added to the atmosphere.  As a result the day was a great success and we were overwhelmed by the response from the villagers and village businesses.

In 2007 we have a bigger and better show to look forward to, thanks to the generous sponsorship, advertising and donations from local businesses, to whom we are very grateful.  Caddington Village Show continues to be a non-profit, volunteer-run group that aims to celebrate village life. Any profits made will be ploughed back into the next show and other events we may organise for the village in the future.
